Guidelines for Alive Alone Magazine Articles

The Guidelines below are general in nature. Please email Sherri Albern with any questions.

  • All articles will be edited for spelling, grammar, punctuation and clarification.
  • All articles must be your own writing. Avoid copying from a greeting card, book, the internet or rewriting another person’s material.
  • Submit photos which are clear and the highest possible resolution via email. We understand that sometimes a precious photo came from your child’s social media post and is the only version available.
  • Avoid submitting photos which include smoking or drinking.
  • Articles mentioning your faith or lack of faith is permissible but omit trying to convince others that your way should be everyone’s faith or lack of faith.
  • All articles and photos should be submitted to Sherri Albern prior to the requested timeline for each issue unless notified otherwise.

There are three main types of articles:

  1. Memoriams
  2. Articles Relating to the Issue’s Theme
  3. General Topic Articles

Memoriams

You are “introducing” your child to others who never had the opportunity to be acquainted with him or her. Tell about your child’s interests, passion, achievements, hobbies, career or school experiences. The entire article is about your child.

The article may consist of 400 words, and you may include three to four photos of him or her with as high of a resolution as possible. This will be one page and noted as a memoriam along with other memoriams for a specific issue. You may request it to be included in any of the four issues – winter, spring, summer/fall or the holiday issue.

The cost is $100 per child which assists Alive Alone to publish the magazine as subscriptions do not cover the expense. Any member who donates $100 or more, in addition to their membership may request an issue to feature your child.

Articles Relating to the Issue’s Theme

Members are often asked to write an article for these themes but you are encouraged to submit one if you find it relating to you.

These articles may be 200-350 words and must convey the theme. Avoid “introducing” your child but you may refer to him or her in three to four sentences.

We request you submit one or two photos which must be a photo of yourself or one with your child plus either a photo of your child alone or a family photo with as high of a resolution possible. There is no cost for these articles.

General Topic Articles

These articles may be written about any grief topic which relates to bereaved parents who have no surviving children. It is not appropriate to “introduce” your child in the article but you may refer to him or her in three to four sentences.

The article may be 200-350 words and include two photos one which must be the author alone or with the deceased child plus a family photo or one of the child alone with as high of a resolution as possible. These articles will appear somewhere within the magazine with no specification. There is no cost for these articles.
